Brief History of San Francisco
Home

San Francisco was born out of the Gold Rush. Most of the gold was discovered in the East near the Sierra Mountains and surrounding areas. The population of San Francisco was only a few hundred in the 1840's. But by the end of 1849 it boomed to over 20,000 residents. The growth continued through the 50's. But 1856 there were over 55,000 people.

All of this prosperity came crashing down during the 1906 earthquake. Probably the most famous earthquake in the last century, it was responsible for the devastation of the entire city. Its effects can still be seen around the city if you know where to look.

The people of the city came together and rebuilt from the ashes. The San Francisco flag depicts a Phoenix rising form the ashes.

Today the city is a melting pot of cultures, where a single walk down the street can take you through a tour of the world. Known for its art, political movements, and beautiful people, San Francisco is a wonderful place to live or visit.
